The short answer

Wisconsin’s list has 156 labs certified to test drinking water: 132 in Wisconsin and 24 in other states. It also names 4 water utilities’ in-house labs, left out here because they test only their own systems’ water. 43 of the labs here are named for a water utility and may test only its own water, so they come last.

Certification is test by test, so check that a lab is certified for what you want tested, and call first: it will say which bottles to use and how soon the sample has to arrive.

  • Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene

    Well water test kits ordered by phone and shipped free; you pay to mail the sample back, and the lab bills you after testing. Tests run from bacteria alone to a homeowner package covering bacteria, nitrate, fluoride, metals, hardness, volatile organic compounds and atrazine. Bacteria is $35, nitrate $35, lead $38, and the homeowner package $450, as of July 1, 2026.
