The short answer
Not every faucet filter carries a lead claim on a certifier's own listing. Brita's Elite faucet system carries both claims EPA looks for, lead and Class I particulate, for the least over five years. Instapure's F5 has a lead claim for less up front, and PUR PLUS has the most claims but no published price.

A faucet filter screws onto the end of the kitchen faucet, so it needs no tools and no space under the sink, and a lever switches between filtered and unfiltered water. Not all of them carry a health claim on a certifier's own listing. Every filter here was checked against the listings of NSF, WQA and IAPMO on October 16, 2026. TapBuff has not tested these filters.
They are ranked by what those listings cover, then by what each costs over five years at the maker's list prices, for a household of three using 3 gallons a day for drinking and cooking.
The picks at a glance
| Filter | Pick | Certified for | Five years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brita Elite Water Filter Faucet System (SAFF-100/FF-100) | Best for lead | Lead, Chlorine, Total trihalomethanes (TTHM) | $1,004 |
| Instapure COMPLETE F5 Lead Reducing Faucet Water Filter (F5) | Lowest price with a lead claim | Lead, Chlorine | $1,375 |
| PUR PLUS Faucet Filtration System, Horizontal (PFM400H) | Most claims | Lead, PFOA, PFOS and 5 more | — |
| Five-year cost for a household of 3 at the makers’ list prices, cartridges included. A plus sign means a part due in those five years has no published price. | |||
Check the listing, not the box
For lead, EPA's consumer tool looks for two claims on the same filter: lead reduction under NSF/ANSI 53, and Class I particulate reduction under NSF/ANSI 42. Several faucet filters fall short of that:
- Instapure F8 ULTRA. Instapure says it reduces lead and VOCs. Its only listing, WQA's, is under NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, which covers the lead content of the filter's own parts, not lead in your water. It has no reduction claim on any listing.
- Instapure F2. WQA lists it under NSF/ANSI 42 only, for chlorine, taste and odor.
- Culligan's and ZeroWater's faucet filters. WQA lists PFOA and PFOS claims under NSF/ANSI 53 for Culligan's CFM-300 and CULFM models and ZeroWater's ZFM-400, but no lead claim. Neither maker sells them on its own store, so they have no price here and aren't in the table.
How the picks are ranked
What the listings cover comes first. A filter with lead and PFAS claims ranks above one with a lead claim alone, which ranks above one listed for chlorine only.
Then five-year cost. Each figure is the faucet system's list price plus every filter due in five years, at the maker's list prices, with the first filter in the box. Makers rate a filter in gallons and in months, and you replace it at whichever runs out first. Where a maker publishes no price, there is no figure, rather than a guess.
The picks
Brita Elite Water Filter Faucet System (SAFF-100/FF-100)
Best for both claims EPA looks for, at the lowest five-year cost
Strengths
- Lead under NSF/ANSI 53 and Class I particulate under NSF/ANSI 42, on WQA's listing
- Asbestos, chlordane, toxaphene and VOCs under 53 as well, and seven claims under NSF/ANSI 401, microplastics among them
- $32.49 for the system, and $17.99 a filter
Trade-offs
- Filter rated 100 gallons or four months: at 3 gallons a day, a new one about every 33 days
- No PFAS claim
- Brita says the 100-gallon life starts after a 5-minute flush
Instapure COMPLETE F5 Lead Reducing Faucet Water Filter (F5)
Best for a lead claim for the least up front
Strengths
- Lead and cysts under NSF/ANSI 53, and chlorine, taste and odor under NSF/ANSI 42, on WQA's listing
- $27.95, the lowest list price of any faucet filter here with a lead claim
Trade-offs
- No Class I particulate claim, which EPA also looks for in a lead filter
- Filter rated 100 gallons or three months, at $24.95 single, so it costs more than the Brita over five years at single-filter prices. A 2-pack is $29.95, which brings the two about even
- No VOC or PFAS claim
PUR PLUS Faucet Filtration System, Horizontal (PFM400H)
Best for lead, mercury and Total PFAS on the faucet
Strengths
- Lead under NSF/ANSI 53 on NSF's, WQA's and IAPMO's listings, with mercury, VOCs and Total PFAS on IAPMO's
- Class I particulate under NSF/ANSI 42, and microplastics under NSF/ANSI 401 on NSF's and IAPMO's listings
Trade-offs
- PUR publishes no prices, so its five-year cost can't be totaled
- Total PFAS is on IAPMO's listing only. NSF's and WQA's listings for the same system don't show it
- Filter rated 100 gallons or three months: at 3 gallons a day, a new one about every 33 days

Faucet filter, pitcher or under the sink?
A faucet filter is rated for about as much water as a good pitcher filter: 100 gallons for Brita's and PUR's, against 120 for Brita's Elite pitcher filter. So over five years they cost about the same: $1,004 for the Brita faucet system at 3 gallons a day, against $942 for Brita's Tahoe pitcher with the Elite filter.
An under-sink filter is rated for far more water. The Express Water StreamLine carries lead and PFOA/PFOS claims and costs $527 over five years, and it connects to the faucet you have. The best under-sink water filters compares those, and the best water filter pitchers compares pitchers.
Use it the way EPA says
- Cold water only. EPA says not to run hot water through the filter. Switch to unfiltered water for anything hot.
- Replace it on time. EPA says a cartridge used after it expires can be less effective at removing lead. Put in your own household's use in the five-year cost calculator, which starts with the two priced picks and the StreamLine.

Questions people ask
- Do faucet water filters remove lead?
- Some do, by their listings. Of the faucet filters TapBuff tracks, Brita's Elite faucet system, PUR PLUS and the Instapure F5 carry a lead claim under NSF/ANSI 53. The Instapure F2 is listed for chlorine, taste and odor only, and the Instapure F8 ULTRA has no reduction claim on any listing.
- Is PUR or Brita better for a faucet filter?
- By their listings, PUR PLUS carries more: lead on NSF's, WQA's and IAPMO's listings; mercury on WQA's and IAPMO's, and on NSF's for units from two of its three factories; and Total PFAS on IAPMO's. Brita's Elite faucet system carries lead, Class I particulate and VOC claims on WQA's listing. Both filters are rated for 100 gallons. PUR publishes no prices, so the two can't be compared on cost.
- Do faucet filters remove PFAS?
- Of the faucet filters TapBuff tracks, only PUR PLUS does, with a Total PFAS claim on IAPMO's listing. WQA lists PFOA and PFOS claims for Culligan's and ZeroWater's faucet filters, but neither carries a lead claim, and neither maker sells them on its own store.
- How often do you change a faucet filter?
- At its gallon rating or its month rating, whichever comes first. Most faucet filters are rated for 100 gallons, which at 3 gallons a day lasts about 33 days, well before the three or four months on the box.
- Can hot water go through a faucet filter?
- No. EPA says not to run hot water through a filter certified for lead, and to use only cold water for drinking, cooking and baby formula. Faucet filters have a switch to send unfiltered water around the filter for anything else.

- The best water filters for leadBuy a filter with a lead reduction claim on a certifier's own listing, plus the Class I particulate claim EPA suggests looking for too. The cheapest over five years with both is an under-sink filter, the Express Water StreamLine, which carries PFOA and PFOS claims too. The Brondell Coral UC300 adds chloramine, mercury and VOC claims. In a pitcher or a dispenser, Brita's Elite filter carries both claims, and on the faucet, so does Brita's Elite faucet system. Run only cold water through it, and replace the filter on time.Read the guide
- The best water filter pitchersBuy a pitcher whose filter carries a lead claim on a certifier's own listing, then compare what its filters cost. Of the pitchers with a lead claim and a published price, the Brita Tahoe with the Elite filter costs the least over five years. The Culligan pitcher with ZeroWater technology adds PFAS, fluoride and nitrate claims, but each filter is certified for 20 gallons, so it costs several times as much to keep.Read the guide
- The best under-sink water filtersCheck the listing, not the box: some under-sink filters, Waterdrop's 10UA among them, are listed for chlorine, taste and odor only, or not listed at all. Of the systems with lead and PFAS claims, the Express Water StreamLine costs the least over five years. The Brondell Coral UC300 adds chloramine, mercury and VOC claims, and the LARQ is the only one with a Total PFAS claim.Read the guide
