Get your water tested in Virginia.

The labs Virginia certifies to test drinking water, from the state’s own list of Aug. 1, 2026. A lab test is the only way to know what is in your own tap or well.

The short answer

Virginia’s list has 145 labs certified to test drinking water: 82 in Virginia and 63 in other states. 35 of the labs here are named for a water utility and may test only its own water, so they come last.

Certification is test by test, so check that a lab is certified for what you want tested, and call first: it will say which bottles to use and how soon the sample has to arrive.

  • Virginia Household Water Quality Program, Virginia Cooperative Extension

    Drinking water clinics in about 70 counties a year, run through local Extension offices: pick up a kit, collect the sample on the set day, and drop it off locally. Each kit tests well, spring or cistern water for 28 things, including bacteria, nitrate, lead and arsenic. $70 a kit, with funding to help if you need it.
