The labs Maryland certifies to test drinking water, from the state’s own list of Oct. 1, 2026. A lab test is the only way to know what is in your own tap or well.

The short answer

Maryland’s list has 92 labs certified to test drinking water: 38 in Maryland and 54 in other states. 9 of the labs here are named for a water utility and may test only its own water, so they come last.

Certification is test by test, so check that a lab is certified for what you want tested, and call first: it will say which bottles to use and how soon the sample has to arrive.

  • Maryland Department of Health laboratory

    Testing of private well water for bacteria, nitrate, lead, copper, iron, hardness and more, on samples sent in through your local health department. Bacteria is $41, nitrate $18, and lead, copper or iron $20 each.
