The labs Indiana certifies to test drinking water, from the state’s own list of April 8, 2022. A lab test is the only way to know what is in your own tap or well.

The short answer

Indiana’s list has 81 labs certified to test drinking water: 53 in Indiana and 28 in other states. 8 of the labs here are named for a water utility and may test only its own water, so they come last.

Certification is test by test, so check that a lab is certified for what you want tested, and call first: it will say which bottles to use and how soon the sample has to arrive.

  • Indiana Department of Health laboratory

    Test kits for well water: nitrate, fluoride, and arsenic, lead and copper, ordered from the lab and returned by mail. They are open to the public. Nitrate is $10 a sample plus $6.50 shipping per order, fluoride $10 plus shipping, and the arsenic, lead and copper kit $20 plus $6.50 shipping.
