NSF/ANSI 62: Water distillers

Reverse osmosis and distillation · Official title: Drinking Water Distillation Systems

Covers distillers, which boil water and collect the steam as it condenses. NSF notes that heavy metals stay behind, but some chemicals that turn to gas easily can carry over.

What it can cover

  • Heavy metals, which NSF says are left behind when the water boils
  • Other reduction claims as shown on each product listing

What it does not

  • Volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) in general. NSF notes some can carry over with the water vapor.

The usual mistake

Assuming distilled water is free of everything. NSF notes that chemicals that turn to gas easily, such as some VOCs, can carry over.

The fine print

  • NSF's listing search showed no distillers certified by NSF on Oct. 4, 2026.
  • NSF posted a 2026 edition of this standard.
