The short answer
The Aquasana Clean Water Machine carries lead and PFOA/PFOS claims for the least over five years. The AquaTru Classic adds fluoride, arsenic and nitrate, and the Ninja HydraSense has the broadest PFAS claim. The Bluevua RO100ROPOT-Lite costs the least to run, with a lead claim and no PFAS claim.
A countertop water filter sits beside the sink and is filled from the tap, so there's nothing to install, no plumbing and no drain line. That makes it the usual choice for renters and for kitchens with no room under the sink. What one is certified to reduce is on its listing. Every system here was checked against the certifiers' own listings, NSF, WQA and IAPMO, on October 20 and 21, 2026. TapBuff has not tested these systems.
They are ranked by what those listings cover, then by what each costs over five years at the maker's list prices, for a household of three using 3 gallons a day for drinking and cooking.
The picks at a glance
| Filter | Pick | Certified for | Five years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aquasana Clean Water Machine (AQ-CWM2) | Lead and PFAS for the least | Lead, PFOA, PFOS and 3 more | $1,061 |
| AquaTru Classic (AT2000) | Most claims | Lead, Copper, PFOA and 8 more | $1,344 |
| Ninja HydraSense Countertop Water Filtration System (WF1001) | Broadest PFAS claim | Lead, PFOA, PFOS and 6 more | $2,050 |
| Bluevua RO100ROPOT-Lite Countertop Reverse Osmosis System | Lowest five-year cost | Lead, Chromium (total) | $805 |

How the picks are ranked
What the listings cover comes first. A system with lead and PFAS claims ranks above one with a lead claim alone. Countertop reverse osmosis systems are ranked with the rest: the AquaTru carries both, and its fluoride, arsenic and nitrate claims set it apart.
Then five-year cost. Each figure is the system's list price plus every filter due in five years, at the maker's list prices, with the first filters in the box. Makers rate a filter in gallons, in months or both, and you replace it at whichever runs out first. Where a maker publishes no price, there is no figure, rather than a guess.
The picks
Aquasana Clean Water Machine (AQ-CWM2)
Best for lead and PFOA/PFOS claims on the counter for the least over five years
Strengths
- Lead, PFOA/PFOS, mercury, asbestos, cysts, MTBE and VOCs under NSF/ANSI 53, on WQA's listing
- Chlorine and chloramine under NSF/ANSI 42, and 16 claims under NSF/ANSI 401, microplastics among them
- Filters rated 300 gallons or about 6 months each
Trade-offs
- $399.99 list price, though Aquasana showed it for $184.99 on October 9; filters come only in pairs
- No fluoride, arsenic or nitrate claim
- Not the older AQ-CWM, which takes a different filter
AquaTru Classic (AT2000)
Best for fluoride, arsenic and nitrate claims with nothing to install
Strengths
- Fluoride, arsenic, nitrate and nitrite, lead, copper, chromium, perchlorate and radium under NSF/ANSI 58, on IAPMO's listing
- PFOA, PFOS and VOCs under NSF/ANSI 53, and chlorine and chloramine under NSF/ANSI 42
- Reverse osmosis with no plumbing: you fill it from the tap
Trade-offs
- The water it rejects collects in its tap-water tank, and you pour it out
- Three filters on different schedules: 6, 12 and 24 months
Ninja HydraSense Countertop Water Filtration System (WF1001)
Best for PFAS beyond PFOA and PFOS, on the counter
Strengths
- Total PFAS under NSF/ANSI 53, on IAPMO's listing: seven PFAS, PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS and PFNA among them, with lead, mercury, cadmium and VOCs
- Chlorine and chloramine under NSF/ANSI 42, and 14 claims under NSF/ANSI 401, microplastics among them
Trade-offs
- Filters rated 120 gallons or 6 months, at $39.99 each: at 3 gallons a day, one about every 40 days
- No fluoride, arsenic or nitrate claim
- SharkNinja sells it as the WF1003, with a travel bottle; Amazon sells the WF1001 unit alone
Bluevua RO100ROPOT-Lite Countertop Reverse Osmosis System
Best for a lead claim on the counter for the least over five years
Strengths
- Lead, cadmium and trivalent chromium under NSF/ANSI 58, on WQA's listing
- The lowest five-year cost of any countertop system here, at Bluevua's $349 regular price
- Reverse osmosis with no plumbing: you fill it from the tap
Trade-offs
- No PFAS, fluoride, arsenic or nitrate claim
- Its UV and Travel versions are listed without the lead claim, so check the model
- Bluevua publishes no gallon ratings or waste ratio
The other two
- Brita Hub. Lead and mercury under NSF/ANSI 53 on WQA's listing, with chlorine and chloramine under NSF/ANSI 42 and a VOC claim on IAPMO's. No PFAS claim. It costs $1,545 over five years.
- Culligan MaxClear Scout. A gravity filter with lead and Total PFAS claims under NSF/ANSI 53 on IAPMO's listing. Its elements are rated only 50 gallons each, so at 3 gallons a day it costs $8,840 over five years, the most of any system here.
Countertop, pitcher or reverse osmosis
A pitcher holds less and costs less to buy: the best water filter pitchers ranks them, along with Brita's UltraMax dispenser. For more water than a countertop unit holds, or for fluoride, arsenic and nitrate under the sink, the best reverse osmosis systems compares those. The best water filters for PFAS ranks every kind by its PFAS claim. For fluoride, the best water filters for fluoride ranks the seven systems with that claim, the AquaTru among them.

Questions people ask
- Do countertop water filters remove lead?
- Those with a lead claim on a certifier's listing are certified to, and all six countertop systems TapBuff tracks have one: the Aquasana Clean Water Machine, AquaTru Classic, Ninja HydraSense, Bluevua RO100ROPOT-Lite, Brita Hub and Culligan MaxClear. Bluevua's UV and Travel versions are listed without it, so check the model.
- Do countertop filters remove PFAS?
- Four of the six carry a PFAS claim. The Aquasana Clean Water Machine and AquaTru Classic are listed for PFOA and PFOS, and the Ninja HydraSense and Culligan MaxClear for Total PFAS, which covers seven PFAS. The Bluevua and the Brita Hub carry no PFAS claim.
- Countertop filter or countertop reverse osmosis?
- A countertop reverse osmosis system can carry claims carbon can't, for fluoride, arsenic and nitrate: the AquaTru Classic has all three. It also rejects some water, which you pour out. A carbon countertop filter keeps all the water and can carry lead, PFAS and chloramine claims.
- Do you have to install a countertop water filter?
- No. Each of these is filled from the tap and sits on the counter, with no plumbing and no drain line. That makes them the usual choice for renters and for kitchens with no room under the sink.
- How often do you change a countertop filter?
- It ranges widely. The Culligan MaxClear's elements are rated 50 gallons, the Ninja's and Brita Hub's 120, and the Aquasana's 300 or about six months. The reverse osmosis systems replace their filters on schedules of 6 to 24 months. At 3 gallons a day, a 120-gallon filter lasts about 40 days.

- The best water filter pitchersBuy a pitcher whose filter carries a lead claim on a certifier's own listing, then compare what its filters cost. Of the pitchers with a lead claim and a published price, the Brita Tahoe with the Elite filter costs the least over five years. The Culligan pitcher with ZeroWater technology adds PFAS, fluoride and nitrate claims, but each filter is certified for 20 gallons, so it costs several times as much to keep.Read the guide
- The best reverse osmosis systemsCheck the listing, not the box: NSF/ANSI 58 requires only a total dissolved solids claim, and many systems carry nothing more. Of the systems with lead and PFAS claims, the Waterdrop G3P600 costs the least over five years under the sink. The AquaTru Classic adds nitrate and arsenic claims and needs no plumbing.Read the guide
- The best water filters for PFASBuy a filter with a PFAS claim on a certifier's own listing, then compare what it costs to keep running. Of the filters certified for Total PFAS, which covers seven PFAS, the LARQ Under Sink costs the least over five years. For lead as well, the Ninja HydraSense countertop filter carries Total PFAS and lead claims, and the Express Water StreamLine under-sink filter covers PFOA, PFOS and lead for less. Pitchers cost the least to buy and the most to keep.Read the guide
